Do's and Don'ts to make your speech a success

The chance to make a speech in publicly does not come around all that often, so you need to make the most of the opportunity when it arises. Here are some tips and tricks to make sure you take your chance when it comes along.

  1. Do research your subject. Whether it is for a happy or more poignant occasion, having the information to hand is crucial to making sure your speech is memorable. Speak to Family, Friends, Work Mates, Team Mates and anyone else that might be able to help you along the way.

  2. Do not try to wing it. Unless you are extremely confident, are blessed with a photographic memory and experienced in Public Speaking, do not do it! You will forget something or someone.

  3. Do introduce yourself and make sure everyone can hear you.

  4. Don't have too many inside jokes!

  5. Do Practice. Practice, Practice, Practice. And then practice again. Familiarity with your speech will help to build your confidence.

  6. Do not drink Alcohol before your speech.

  7. Do Slow down. Take your time. Breathe.

  8. Do not use Bad Language.

  9. Do engage people, make eye contact, bring them on the journey with you.

  10. Do not try to challenge Hecklers.

  11. Do have Notes or Prompt cards. They will keep you on track and make sure that you don't forget anyone.
